Personal project: Edges
The theme for this project will be 'Edges' and on this page I will be documenting my progress through this project and will sharing how much I've improved.
Here is my first pinterest board I made with the theme of edges for my personal project.

This a mind map I have made on the theme edges
Set 1:School edges with DSLR camera
WWW
I tried to make all the pictures different and I think it worked but could be improved. However, what really went well for me was that how nearly all my pictures taken are ongoing, either they get bigger or smaller, or continue onwards. My favourite of all the pictures is the second one because I love the way the edge of the concrete has three levels and how it gets bigger and continues on. |
EBI
What I would would have been better is that I had taken more pictures. It would have been better to had also taken more outside pictures so that I could have a variety and choices of pictures inside of everything mostly being outside. Because I took most of pictures inside they look kind of dull compared to the outside ones. Next I will take more pictures outside and try to balance the outside and inside pictures so that it will look less dull. |
Set 2:School edges with iPods
WWW
I really improved from my last set of pictures because I used iPods which had Hipstamatic. These photographs are a lot better because of the effect and I think these pictures are a lot more unique and original. |
EBI
What I would improve with these sets of images is maybe the filter. It would have better if I used different effects since I was using hipstamatic the images would have turned out a lot more different from each other instead of all of them having the same filter. |
Randy Grskovic
Randy Gskovic explores and thoroughly examines the digital style using an analog process. With help from the internet Gskovic personally collects images from magazines that have been moving since they were printed and distributed. Randy then carefully and precisely cuts the image, rearranges it, layers it and sticks it. He does this with no means of digital help.
Randy likes to use found family photos he slices the photographs into geometric abstractions. He empties the cherish memories of their once sentimental meaning. Randy says - "The memory has been changed and so has the document. The photograph as well as any other document is never and accurate depiction of the truth"

This photo looks like a wedding photo to me because when I look closely at both of the females dresses they look very fancy. Also one of them is wearing white and a veil. From the title I can tell that the photo was taken a long time ago. This is interesting because this might be a memory of some sort or the artist found it in a charity shop.
What happen original picture is that the artist cut into pieces and rearranged it. Because the artist did this the picture now has more edges in the inside of the photo. This might help us with the idea of edges because the artist has created more edges, which revolves around the theme we are doing. They the way he has changed is very abstract and unique. This could help us change you photo into adding more edges.
The photo could also be a memory of something. The artist could have found the photo in an album also. If I were to meet the artist I would ask him why he picked that picture?

Another evaluation of Randy Grskovics work
Edges at home:
This is my favourite image because of the edges inside. Also it looks very weird but interesting as well as that is abstract. I created this by photo by putting my phone camera on pano mode. Then after that I first started moving the phone slowly and then very fast in order to create this ripple effect.
What I have done so far
Image 1
This image is my first attempt at re-creating edges similar to the method used by Randy Grskovic. What I did was that I cut each piece precisely and stick on the black but to make sure they were all the same size I cut one and then measures out the next one then cut it out. I love the way it looks, its very interesting. But it would have better is there weren't tiny spaces between some of the strips. Overall for my first time I think I did really well even there is much to improve. |
Image 2
In this image I tired changing the original positioning of the image by cutting a triangle and then swapping the two remaining sides and then sticking everything in place. I like this picture because I really improve on my cutting because in the other picture my cutting was sloppy and messy. What I could to do to improve this picture is make it more complicated and confusing for the people looking at it. |
With this image I use photo shop and I did the rest but cutting. First I picked the picture I wanted and used to photo shop to use the pattern you see above and I printed that off. Next I cut some of the squares and then I printed the same photo but this time with it's original form after that I stuck the cut out photo on top of the normal picture using spray mount, then I just repeated that method of layering until I was satisfied. I'm really fond of this idea and would like to trying making it my final piece but I need to make some improvements.
Pictures taken with DSLR:
Here some of my pictures that I took with the DLR around the school. What I plan to do with these is print all of them then pick some that look similar and some that don't and pair them together and weave them.I want to experiment with this new method and see how the completely new picture turns out.
Ellen Jackson
Ellen Jackson actually is not a photographer, however I am very interested in her work and it contributes with this theme of 'Edges'. Ellen actually graduated from New York's Fashion Institute of technology and graduated with a degree of in textile design. While Ellen was there she was introduced to the art of mosaics then her unexpected passion began. Ellen slices a series of images and textured materials that then she cuts, moves then lays them together. Doing so she combines mosaics and contemporary art.

This images looks like it used to be a picture with patterns because as I look closely at it I can see some flowers and other patterns. To me it looks like the original pictures was cut up into equal little squares and rearranged and changing the positions, to make this mosaic type images. However the pieces are not stuck on the paper. The artist has changed this now by making it have more edges and abstract.
This really contributes with our theme of edges because by the artist cutting into the image and changing she has added more edges. The image can inspire lots of other ideas of edges and influence us to think like her. If I could ask the artist one question it would be what influenced you to created this type of images?

How to use photoshop
First thing you have to make sure before using Photoshop is to remember to have an image already on your desktop. Then go to the search bar and type Photoshop and it should appear. Once you have done that go to file > open > desktop and then click on the image and press the open button which should be in the bottom right corner. After that the image should be in photoshop as you see it now (above) but without the pattern on it just a normal photo. Now you should be ready to start changing your image. As you see the bar on the side click on the button that looks likes a star, that is what you need in order to photoshop. Then go to tall bar at the top to where the star is and pick a shape, next go to you're original image and then click shift to make the shape come out equal and drag the mouse across you're picture then shape should end up appearing on your image (in white). The next thing you will have to do is go to the far right corner to where it says 'background' then you to click on it and press command > J this will copy it and the copy should say 'background copy'. Drag that above where it says shape 1 then hold alt, while holding that between the two bars looks for a odd shape it should look like two circles overlapped. Once the appears click is this will make the background copy and shape 1 lock, so that you can change the way you're original images looks. Once all of that is done you can play with you're a little, go to it and move the place where it used to be white and move it around so that another part of the image shows. Now you are completely done, keep on doing this process until you are satisfied.
evaluation
To develop my knowledge on the theme 'edges' I had chosen to analyse the work of Ellen Jackson. Initially I had discovered her by searching 'edges artist'. She is however, not a photographer but her work is really intriguing and relates to the theme. Her work revolves around weaving and mosaics. I choose Ellen because she weaved different pictures with were different sizes together to create a unique effect.
The strips were not all the same size's, however she managed to weave other materials together to form one piece of work. The most fascinating part of her work was the central themes and colours. They all merged together and created one main theme. I also took some interest in her unique patterns and tones. The theme I had chosen to explore was 'edges'. My first thoughts had revolved around objects such as , shapes , tables , squares and corners. However, through out the course my ideas changed dramatically and I started looking at edges inside and outside the school building. Slowly, I developed my ideas and tried out different methods of making edges and basing my final piece on weaving.
The different types of experiments I have carried out with the media, entailed exploring many examples of edges online and on Pinterest. The techniques I developed was weaving an image with another image. I was also able to experiment with an image of the school building that I had taken with a DSLR and create different layers of edges on Photoshop. I did this because I wanted to stretch my knowledge of edges and refine my work. Furthermore, I wanted to experiment with Photoshop and then see if I could combine it with something else such as, cutting and sticking what I have already used in Photoshop. In the beginning I really struggled with coming up with an actual idea so I decided to experiment with a wide range of things before I came up with the idea of weaving and developing new methods of weaving. I developed my investigating by looking at some of Randy Grskovic's work and Ellen Jackson work and used their pieces as inspiration to advance my own work.

final piece
Here is my final piece, with the first two images I weaved them together to create the last image. With the first two images I weaved them together making the first image my background, then I equally cut thick strips. After I did this I took the second image and cut it into irregular strips, I then carefully weaved all the pieces together. I cut the pieces into irregular strips because I wanted to create an illusion effect and slightly confuse the viewers and make them think about how the two images might have merged together. I was hoping to create a very abstract and unique image and in my opinion I think that is what I created. However, I feel that I have not successfully explored the theme because there are many more artist and edges out there. On the other hand, I feel that I have explored some of the theme and contributed that to my final piece. If I had had more time I would have made another weave but this time with a different model and background such as, a white background instead of black because white is more eye catching to the viewers and has dramatic effect when two photo are merged together. I also would have made irregular sized strips for the whole weave so it would look even more wild. What is personal about my work is that I took this images of my classmate with DSLR. What I hope that the viewers will understand from looking at my work is not everything can be changed even two normal photos can be changed into something completely now and personal to someone. I also want them to understand that all art can never actually be perfect because if it was, people would stop making new art.
