PHOTOGRAMS/RAYOGRaphs
rWhat is a Photogram/Rayogram?
A photogram or rayogram is the process of making a photograph without a camera. This is created by placing objects on a photo sensitive surface and exposing light to them. Where the object is placed that part of the paper will turn white because the object will be protecting it from the light, how this depends on the opacity of the object. If some light passes through the tone of the colour with change so it looks like theres a shadowy effect, and if there is no protection the paper will turn black. How do you make a photogram? Firstly, when you enter the darkroom pick various different objects of your choosing. Then place them on the light sensitive photographic paper. After you need to expose this is the light for 10 seconds. Finally, the paper needs to be put in 3 different chemicals. The first chemical is used the developer, this chemical develops the photogram and makes the photo appear. Then there is the stop bathe, this stops it developing anymore. This is used between the developer stage and the fixer stage, you must never mix the two chemicals, finally you put the photogram in some water to wash off any remaining chemicals on the paper. |
The slide show above is some various examples of Photograms.

my photograms
We have been experimenting using photograms in one of my photography lessons, here are the two I made.
Image 1:
My first photogram was quite a success and I think it went well. I really love how the photogram came out even though the objects are simple the photo looks interesting to me. Also the way there is a slight dark tone in the picture makes some of the other white objects look like they have a shadow. I think I should have used more abstracted shapes or shapes that weren't as simple as these. However for my first try I think I did a really good job of it. I also really enjoy looking at the top of the image because I really love how the tone is a bit faded than the whole image itself. This really does make the photo more enjoyable to look at. |
Image 2:
My second turn out to be a success and you can clearly see what objects are used. However, there is not much going on in the image. It is very dull and boring even though you can tell what the objects are you wouldn't find it interesting or intriguing, compared to the first image. I haven't tired to improved compared to the first one. If I was able to take this image again I would put more effort in the positioning of the objects and make more interesting and eye catching for the people who might be looking at it. I would try make the tones contrast each other and the try use different objects instead of the basic one. For example I could use my hand holding something in one of my images. |
